Binance Japan is a separate Japanese company within the Binance group, registered with Japan's Financial Services Agency as a crypto-asset exchange. It exists because Binance's global platform could not legally serve Japan: the FSA warned "Binance" in March 2018 and Binance Holdings in June 2021 for operating here without registration. Binance bought a licensed local exchange, Sakura Exchange BitCoin, at the end of 2022 and relaunched it as Binance Japan on 1 August 2023 with 34 tokens.
Three years on, it lists 66 coins and has a powerful local partner: PayPay, Japan's biggest QR payment app, owns 40% of the company. This review looks at Binance Japan from the point of view of an international resident, often someone who had a global Binance account before arriving. Figures come from Binance Japan's own fee announcement, its listing notices and PayPay's press releases.

Binance Japan vs Binance global: what changes when you live here
This is the question most international residents arrive with. The short answer: once you are resident in Japan, Binance Japan is the only Binance you can use, and it is a much narrower product. When the Japanese entity launched, existing global users living in Japan were asked to migrate from August 2023; tokens that Binance Japan did not support were converted to BTC on 30 November 2023.
Binance Japan
FSA-registered. Yen deposits and withdrawals, PayPay integration, customer assets segregated under Japanese law. Spot trading, Convert, recurring buys, Simple Earn, Launchpool, HODLer Airdrops, a domestic JCB credit card.
66 coins.
Binance global
Not registered with the FSA and not available to Japan residents. Futures and other derivatives, margin, P2P, a far larger coin list and the global card programme.
Warned twice by the FSA for unregistered activity in Japan.
If you are used to perpetual futures, there is no domestic substitute at Binance Japan. Other Japanese exchanges offer leverage, but it is capped at 2x for individuals by law. Offshore platforms that still court Japanese users are on the FSA's warning list and several, including Bybit and Bitget, have been pulling out. Our page on offshore exchanges and Japan tracks who has left and how to move funds legally.
Visitors: Binance Pay now works at PayPay shops
Since 30 September 2026, people holding a Binance account abroad can pay at PayPay merchants across Japan through Binance Pay, using a cross-border QR scheme; the shop receives yen. This is an inbound tourism feature: Japan residents and Binance Japan customers are excluded. More in our PayPay crypto guide.
Who should use Binance Japan?
Altcoin collectors get the most out of it. Sixty-six coins is well ahead of bitFlyer and bitbank (44 each) and miles ahead of Rakuten Wallet (14). New listings keep coming: TRB, GIGGLE and MEME were added in June 2026.
PayPay users are the second group. You can pay for Convert purchases directly from your PayPay Money balance or with PayPay Points, and send sale proceeds back to PayPay Money for ¥110, then spend them anywhere that takes PayPay. No other Japanese exchange connects to PayPay.
BNB holders are the third. BNB discounts your trading fees and is what the Binance Japan Card pays out in, and Japanese exchanges listing BNB are scarce; BITPOINT dropped it in October 2026.
It is the wrong pick for fee-sensitive Bitcoin traders, anyone who wants leverage, and people who want to pay in cash at a convenience store.
Fees in practice: a ¥100,000 Bitcoin round trip
Binance Japan has two venues. The dealer desk (販売所, hanbaijo)The dealer desk (販売所, hanbaijo), called Convert at Binance Japan: you buy from the company at a quoted price. No fee, but a spread is built in., branded Convert, is where PayPay purchases happen. The order book (取引所, torihikijo)The exchange or order book (取引所, torihikijo): users trade with each other at prices they set. Lower fees, slightly more complex orders. charges both makers and takersMaker: your limit order waits on the book. Taker: your order fills against one already there. Many exchanges charge makers less. 0.10% at the entry level. Convert has no fee, but its spreadThe gap between the buy price and the sell price at the same moment. On dealer desks it can be several percent. is unpublished.
| Buy ¥100,000 of BTC, sell, withdraw | Order book | Order book, fees in BNB | PayPay + Convert (2% spread assumed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit | Bank transfer (your bank's fee) | Bank transfer (your bank's fee) | Pay at purchase with PayPay Money: ¥0 |
| Buy | ≈¥100 | ≈¥75 | ≈¥2,000 |
| Sell | ≈¥100 | ≈¥75 | ≈¥2,000 |
| Withdraw yen | ¥150 to bank | ¥150 to bank | ¥110 to PayPay Money |
| Total | ≈¥350 + transfer fee | ≈¥300 + transfer fee | ≈¥4,110 |
On the order book a round trip costs around ¥300–¥350 plus whatever your bank charges to send the deposit. The same trip at SBI VC Trade or GMO Coin costs about ¥100 because their BTC taker fee is 0.05% and withdrawals are free. The PayPay route is the convenient one, and convenience costs: if the spread were 2% each way, you would give up about ¥4,000. Run your own amounts in our fee calculator.
Getting yen in and out
Bank transfers go to Binance Japan's receiving accounts at GMO Aozora Net Bank or docomo SMTB Net Bank. Binance Japan charges nothing, but your bank may. As at every Japanese exchange, the sending account must be in your own name; mismatched names are a common reason deposits get stuck for foreign residents whose bank shows their name differently from the exchange.
PayPay Money works two ways. Paying at the moment of purchase is free, from ¥1,000, up to ¥1 million per 24 hours and ¥2 million per 30 days. Since 9 April 2026 you can also pre-deposit PayPay Money for ¥110 per deposit; those funds work on both Convert and the order book, and the pre-deposit limit has been ¥1 million per 24 hours and ¥2 million per 30 days since 18 August 2026. Your PayPay account must be fully identity-verified and the balance must be PayPay Money; per PayPay's notice, PayPay Money Lite and limited-time points are excluded. Linking the two accounts is a one-time switch, made by tapping the PayPay icon on Binance Japan's dealer desk, and it can be undone later. Foreign residents should note one more detail: per PayPay's notice of 7 July 2026, residence cards issued on or after 14 June 2026 cannot be used for PayPay's eKYC for the time being, and PayPay recommends verifying with a My Number Card instead. Our guide to paying for crypto in Japan compares the alternatives.
Crypto withdrawal fees vary by coin and network and are shown on the withdrawal screen. Under Japan's Travel RuleRules that make exchanges pass sender and recipient details along with crypto transfers. In force in Japan since June 2023. you will be asked who owns the receiving address; see our wallet guide for how this works with self-custody.
Earn products and the Binance Japan Card
Simple Earn (lending) covered 29 coins in December 2025, and BNB can be locked for rewards. Launchpool and HODLer Airdrops bring a slice of the global programmes to Japan. Rewards count as income when you receive them and are generally taxed as miscellaneous income at up to about 55%; our Japan crypto tax guide explains how.
The Binance Japan Card, issued by Life Card on the JCB network, opened for applications on 13 January 2026. It credits 1.6% of monthly shopping in BNB to your Binance Japan account. The annual fee is waived in year one and afterwards costs ¥1,650 unless you spend ¥100,000 or more in a year. Applicants must be Japan residents aged 18 to 75 with a verified Binance Japan account, and the card company does its own screening. Compare it with other options in our crypto card guide.
Safety, ownership and track record
As a registered exchange, Binance Japan must segregate customer yen and crypto from its own funds and keep most crypto in offline cold wallets, under Japanese law and FSA supervision. That is the practical difference from holding coins on a global platform that answers to no Japanese regulator. PayPay's 40% stake, announced on 9 October 2025, also puts a major domestic company on the shareholder register.
The biggest risk for English speakers is impersonation. Scammers use the Binance name in social-media "investment groups" and fake apps. A genuine exchange will never ask you to transfer money to a personal bank account. Read our guide to crypto scams in Japan before acting on any unsolicited offer.
Opening an account as a foreign resident
You need to live in Japan and be at least 18. Sign-up runs in the app: register an email or phone number, set a password, enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID, then verify. Reading a My Number Card's IC chip is the fastest route; photo-based checks take longer.
- A My Number Card (most foreign residents can get one) or a Japanese driving licence; we could not confirm from official pages whether a residence card alone is accepted
- A Japanese bank account or a verified PayPay account in your own name (per PayPay's notice, residence cards issued on or after 14 June 2026 can't be used for PayPay's eKYC for now; PayPay suggests a My Number Card)
- Your tax residence details: since January 2026, Japanese exchanges collect a CARF self-certification, including a foreign tax ID if you are tax resident elsewhere

Binance Japan: common questions

No. Japan residents are served only by Binance Japan, the FSA-registered entity. Users of the global platform living in Japan were moved across from August 2023, and tokens Binance Japan did not list were converted to BTC on 30 November 2023. The FSA has issued warnings about Binance operating in Japan without registration in 2018 and 2021.

Binance Japan accepts adults aged 18 or over who live in Japan. Its identity check centres on the My Number Card (IC chip) or a Japanese driving licence; we could not find an official statement on whether a residence card alone is accepted. Most foreign residents registered at a municipal office can get a My Number Card, which avoids the question.
What are Binance Japan's trading fees?
At the standard VIP0 level, spot trading costs 0.10% for both makers and takers, or 0.075% if you pay fees in BNB. Fees fall with volume, down to 0.01% maker and 0.023% taker at VIP7. The Convert dealer desk has no fee but includes an unpublished spread.
Does Binance Japan offer futures or leverage?
No. Binance Japan offers spot trading, recurring buys, Simple Earn, Launchpool and HODLer Airdrops, but no futures, perpetuals or margin trading. Retail leverage in Japan is capped at 2x and Binance Japan does not offer it.
Can tourists pay with Binance Pay in Japan?
Since 30 September 2026, overseas Binance Pay users can pay at PayPay merchants across Japan through a cross-border QR link, with the shop receiving yen. The feature is for visitors only; Japan residents and Binance Japan users cannot use it.
How do I withdraw yen from Binance Japan?
You can withdraw to a Japanese bank account for ¥150 per withdrawal or to PayPay Money for ¥110. The bank account or PayPay account must be in your own name.
