What is Cardano?

Cardano is a blockchain launched in 2017, and ADA is its coin. It is named after the 19th-century mathematician Ada Lovelace. Unlike Dogecoin, it has a fixed maximum supply of 45 billion ADA. Its development has been led by three organisations: IOG (formerly IOHK, the company associated with founder Charles Hoskinson), EMURGO and the Cardano Foundation.

Cardano uses proof of stakeBlock validators are chosen according to the coins they hold or have delegated, instead of burning electricity as in mining., in a protocol called Ouroboros, with time divided into roughly five-day epochs. That design is what makes staking possible: people who hold ADA can earn rewards for helping secure the network. It is the key difference between ADA and proof-of-work coins such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin.

What about Japan? The links we can verify are on the exchange side: Sony Group's S.BLOX lists ADA as one of its eight coins, and SBI VC Trade runs an ADA staking service. We could not confirm any Japan-specific Cardano projects from official sources, so we do not describe any. For coins that really did originate in Japan, see Japanese cryptocurrencies.

Where can you stake ADA in Japan?

StakingEarning rewards by locking or delegating coins to help run a proof-of-stake network. Rates vary and nothing is guaranteed. through a Japanese exchange means the exchange stakes ADA on your behalf and passes on part of the reward. It is hands-off, but the exchange keeps a share, and you take its credit risk.

GMO Coin supports six staking coins, including ADA. Its page says you receive rewards simply by holding the coin; the rewards it earns in a month are split by each customer's average holding and paid from the following month, and small amounts below the minimum are not paid. SBI VC Trade supports 14 coins and distributes 75% of the confirmed monthly result to customers. OKJ's staking page also lists ADA.

What staking does not do

Staking rates move and are not guaranteed. If ADA's price falls, rewards will not cover the loss. Coins held at an exchange also carry that firm's risk. Terms change, so read the current official page before you apply.

You can also delegate ADA from your own wallet. If you buy at a Japanese exchange and withdraw to a wallet, the Travel RuleA rule requiring sender and receiver details to travel with a crypto transfer between providers. In force in Japan since 1 June 2023. applies, and wallet-side staking is a more technical route. Read our wallet guide before you try it.

Order book or dealer desk for ADA?

For the lowest cost, use an order bookUsers trade with each other through a list of buy and sell orders. Fees are low.. At bitbank, non-BTC pairs have a -0.02% maker and 0.12% taker fee; at GMO Coin it is -0.03% and 0.09% on pairs outside BTC, ETH and XRP. Both ADA/JPY markets appear in the exchanges' public symbol lists. By contrast, dealer desks at SBI VC Trade, CoinTrade and S.BLOX show no fee, but the spreadThe gap between buy and sell prices. On a dealer desk it is the real fee and can widen in fast markets. is the cost.

If staking is the goal, GMO Coin is convenient because you can buy ADA on its order book and it also qualifies for staking in the same account. Compare costs on the fee comparison page.

From first purchase to first reward

  1. Choose your goal

Cheapest purchase points to an order book; hands-off rewards point to a staking exchange.

  2. Open an account and fund it

Verify with a residence card or My Number Card, and deposit yen from a bank account in your own name. The flow matches our Bitcoin buying guide.

  3. Buy ADA

    Try a small order first.

  4. Check the staking terms

Confirm eligibility, payout timing and the exchange's share on the official page.

  5. Record every reward

Note the date, quantity and yen value when it is received.

A checklist before you stake

  • Reward share: what percentage reaches you (75% at SBI VC Trade).
  • Payout timing: when and how often rewards are paid.
  • Selling and withdrawing: whether you can sell or send ADA while it is staked.
  • Minimum amount: some rewards below a minimum quantity are not paid.
  • Records: whether the exchange shows each reward with a date, for tax.

Rules on selling and sending during staking differ by exchange. If you plan to hold ADA for a while, consider staking only part of your balance at first. If you are leaving Japan, check moving to or leaving Japan before you rely on a staking arrangement tied to a Japanese bank account.

ADA staking versus the other staking coins you can buy in Japan

ADA is not the only coin you can stake through a Japanese exchange. GMO Coin's list also includes ETH, DOT, ATOM, SOL and ASTR, and SBI VC Trade's list of 14 includes ETH, SOL, TRX, HBAR, AVAX, SUI, TON, DOT, NEAR, ATOM, FLR, ALGO and XDC. If your aim is simply to earn rewards, it is worth comparing the reward split, the payout timing and the coin's own volatility rather than choosing on name recognition alone.

One practical consequence of staking through an exchange is that you give up control of the keys. The coins sit in the exchange's custody, you rely on its accounting to calculate your share, and you cannot choose which validator the exchange delegates to. In return you get a simple screen, yen deposits and withdrawals, and an annual transaction report that makes tax filing easier. For expats who plan to stay in Japan for years, that convenience is often what decides it.

If you may leave Japan, remember that a Japanese exchange account usually needs a Japanese address and a Japanese bank account for yen withdrawals. Plan how you will sell or transfer before your residence status changes, and keep all reward records for the tax years you were resident.

Tax on ADA and staking rewards

Gains from selling ADA are miscellaneous incomeA category for income that fits no other type; added to your other income and taxed progressively. (雑所得, zatsu-shotoku) taxed together with your other income. Staking rewards are treated as income at their market value when you receive them, according to the National Tax Agency FAQ. That means you may owe tax on rewards in a year when you sold nothing. If you later sell the rewards, a separate gain or loss may arise.

Rates run 5-45% national tax plus 10% resident tax, up to 55%. An employee with one employer and other income of ¥200,000 or less a year need not file a national return, but resident tax still needs a declaration. A 20% separate rate is legislated but cannot start before 2028 on our estimate. See crypto tax in Japan and the tax reform page; for your own case, ask a tax accountant.
